Teaching Indigenous Ways of Well-Being Through Yoga

Sk’elep School of Excellence used their Healthy Schools BC First Nations Grant to have all students from kindergarten to grade seven participate in yoga lessons. These lessons focused on Indigenous Ways of Wellness by recognizing the mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical aspects of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. The lessons also helped teach students about the Yama’s and the Niyama’s (called vitamins and poisons by the students), which help to guide their actions towards respect, responsibility and reliability. Furthermore, teachers were able to use the skills and activities taught in the yoga lessons to support students’ ability to self-regulate and focus in order to increase successful learning in the classroom.
