Plants Used as Foods and Medicine

Gitsegukla Elementary School Indigenous Ways of Wellness n/a School Level Elementary Northern Health Authority Public

Gitsegukla Elementary School used a Healthy Schools BC First Nations School Grant for students to get out on the land and learn about traditional food and medicine gathering techniques.

Elders from the Gitsegukla community taught students how to identify, harvest, and prepare plants, mushrooms, and medicines. Elders used the Gitxsan language when they spoke to students so that students would become more familiar with it. One of the plants that students harvested was Devil’s Club, and students brought it back to the school to make it into a sauve. The grant funds were used to purchase jars for the sauve, to pay the Elders honorariums, and to provide snacks to students while they were out on the land.
