School Counsellor Shirley Giroux, who works at Valemount Elementary and Valemount Secondary Schools (SD 57), partnered with Northern Health to host a book club as a way to support student and staff’s mental health. Attendees at the book club included teachers, social workers, mental health counsellors, nurses, educational assistants, school office managers and school administrators. The books focused on mental health and social determinants of health. Giroux says the initiative brought together professionals who support students’ mental health in an informal setting where they had time and space to build relationships with each other.
