Action Guides
The Healthy Schools BC Action Guides share evidence-based practices and promising innovations that are showing results in creating healthy schools in BC.
Healthy Living Performance Standards
The BC Healthy Living Performance Standards (HLPS), developed by BC educators, are available as a resource for BC schools to support learning progression for students. These standards are for grades kindergarten to grade 12 and there are four aspects of the HLPS: Healthy Eating, Active Living, Healthy Relationships, and Healthy Practices. Quick Scales for all grades are available in this section.
Assessment Tools
Assessment tools are helpful to learn about ‘where you are currently at’ to help determine further action. This section highlights three additional assessment tools including the Full Length Healthy Schools Assessment Tool, the Express Healthy Schools Assessment Tool, and the Healthy Living Performance Standards Matrix.
Learning Framework
The Healthy Schools BC Learning Framework outlines the shared involvement of educators and health partners in creating healthy schools, and engaging students in their health and learning. For educators, the Learning Framework is reflective of an inquiry approach as it walks through the Healthy Schools Process. For health partners, the Framework showcases the types of supports that can be provided to aid schools and students in addressing healthy living topics.
School Connectedness
School connectedness is about creating a school community where everyone feels safe, seen, heard, supported, significant and cared for (BC School Based Mental Health Coalition, 2013). The focus in school connectedness is on building strong, positive relationships among students, school staff, families and the larger community.
Comprehensive School Health
CSH is an internationally recognized framework for supporting improvements in students’ educational outcomes while addressing school health in a planned, integrated and holistic way.
Check out the CSH 4 Pillar Activity to start a conversation around what is currently going on in your classroom or school community. The CSH Resource for Health Professionals provides examples of how health professionals can support schools in promoting optimal health using the Comprehensive School Health framework.
